Located at an elevation of 7,936 feet, Fort Garland is known as the “Gateway to the San Luis Valley†as it's the first town you reach after La Veta Pass on Highway 160. Positioned on the eastern border of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, this town in Costilla County lies at the southern tip of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range. Like many other communities in the San Luis Valley, Fort Garland attracts a diverse range of creative individuals, from artists and painters to craftsmen and musicians. The Blanca/Fort Garland Community Center welcomes both locals and tourists year-round, offering daily, monthly, and annual passes for purchase. For information on the top attractions in the San Luis Valley, including the UFO Watchtower, Gator Farm, and the Sand Dunes, visitors can head to the Entrada Visitor Center. Fort Garland, established in 1858, was constructed to address conflicts between white settlers and the Utes residing in the San Luis Valley. Volunteers from New Mexico, led by Colonel Kit Carson, were stationed at the fort and successfully negotiated a treaty with the Utes in 1867. However, nearly a decade later, tensions persisted, leading to the Ninth Cavalry's intervention to prevent further escalation. Ultimately, this group facilitated the relocation of white settlers from Ute territory.<br />

The range stretches from Poncha Pass in central Colorado to Glorieta Pass southeast of Sante Fe, New Mexico. The mighty peaks are covered by San Isabel, Rio Grande, Carsen, and Santa Fe National Forests. Elk and bighorn sheep roam the mountains making them a popular hunting destination. Fishermen delight in the alpine lakes, streams, and rivers. The Sangres offer some of the world’s best rock climbing, downhill, skiing, and white-water rafting. They can wander through the parade grounds and explore five of the authentic adobe structures, including a meticulously recreated rendition of the commandant's quarters dating back to the 1860s.<br />
